Finally the weather has cooperated
for us and the tarpon are moving through the Lower Keys in
larger schools. We've had a couple of great days where my
anglers have hooked multiple tarpon and landed a few nice
fish.
Most of my fishing in May
is fly fishing for tarpon. Right now they are eating a variety
of flies including toad patterns and other shrimp-like fly
patterns. Early morning rolling fish are a great target with
a black and purple fly and then switch up to a lighter fly
after the sun gets up a bit.
Bonefishing has been spotty
but when it has been good the fish are plentiful and range
from 5- to 8- pounds. More and more permit are being spotted
along the Gulf side flats now which means they are maybe
making the move back from the spawn offshore.
Tarpon fishing will remain
very active through July and into August for some of the
big boys, the fall months will be more permit and bonefish
opportunties with some smaller tarpon mixed in.
We still have availability
in August and through the fall months for flats fishing.
It is a great time to be here, calm conditions and tailing
fish.

Summer fishing is awesome! |
We are now in the process of booking charters
in 2008. For those who are planning their trip to the Florida
Keys for the annual Tarpon migration you should consider
booking your days soon. Feel free to email me or call in
the evenings for available dates. I suggest to all my anglers
that come this time of year for fly fishing to try and book
between two and five days in order to get the whole fishing
experience. I try to mix up the trip and take you to different
areas of the Lower Keys each day in search of tarpon.
For those who are interested in light tackle spin fishing
this
is also an excellent time to come fish with us. We run flats
fishing trips for tarpon and also in April and May we will
be offering harbor trips for tarpon and reef
and wreck fishing.
One of the most sought after fish that roam the waters off Key West is the Tarpon. Also known as the "Silver King," the tarpon can grow to over 200lbs. Most of the migrating fish that we see during the months of April through June are in the 70lb range. It's not to say you won't find one larger, but you will definately know that he is by the fight he gives you. There are a few methods for tarpon fishing here in the Keys, it's up to you as to which one suits your style best. Check out our Key West Flats and Backcountry Fishing Calendar for the best times for fishing Key West for tarpon. We offer tarpon fishing charters on the flats, fly fishing and in the Key West Harbor.
