FLY TYING - Merkin Crab Permit Fly
Ingredients:
Hook:Gamakatsu 1, 2
Thread: Tan
Rabbit strip
Yarn: Tan
Lead eyes, Tan rubber legs
About the fly:
Almost every Merkin fly Pattern that is sold in fly shops across
America are tied incorrect. In order for this fly to sink correctly
it must be tied with the yarn on the underside of the hook. Most
of the good permit guides in the Keys know this and therefore
tie their own. The main thing is that it sinks correctly with
the hook up and at a 45 degree angle. I tie many different colors
to imitate different types of crabs and for different areas I
fish. Try one of these next time you fish for permit and you'll
see a difference. Just make sure to get it as close to the fish
as you can. Good luck!!!!
Step 1
Figure eight wrap the eyes into place and wrap thread back to the bend of the
hook.

Step 2
Tie in a rabbit strip on top of the hook with
the hide facing up.
|
| Step 3
Flip the fly over and tie in a piece
of yarn figure eight wrapping it into place. Make sure
to use at least 2-3 wraps and then 2-3 good tight wraps
in front of it to lock it in place. Next tie in a rubber
leg in the same manner.

 |
Step 4
Repeat the process all the way
up to the lead eyes and tie off. |
Step 5
Next hold the rubber legs out
of the way and trim the yarn so it is shaped a little larger
at the tail end. |
